Interpreter Referral Agencies
Finding Interpreter Services
Interpreter referral agencies can help locate a qualified interpreter who is available for the date, time, location, and type of assignment you need. The agency handles the scheduling arrangements and serves as the contact between you and the interpreter.
Before requesting an interpreter, make sure you understand the communication needs and preferences of the deaf or hard of hearing individual. Not all deaf or hard of hearing people communicate in the same way, and the individual is the best source of information about what will provide effective communication for them.
When contacting a referral agency, be prepared to provide information such as:
- Date and time of the appointment or event
- Location or whether the appointment will be virtual
- Expected length of the assignment
- Type of appointment or setting
It is best to request an interpreter as early as possible. Interpreter availability can vary, particularly in some areas of the state or for requests made on short notice.
Cost of Interpreting Services
There is no set statewide rate for interpreting services. Rates and billing practices vary among referral agencies and may depend on the type and length of the assignment, location, travel, scheduling requirements, and other factors. When arranging services, ask the referral agency about rates, minimum charges, travel expenses, cancellation policies, and any other applicable fees.
