On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to share that Nicholas Kiego has been appointed as the next Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of the Deaf.
Nicholas officially takes the helm on August 1. We are excited for you to meet our new leader in person this summer at the 58th Biennial NAD Conference in San Francisco. The Board has full confidence in Nicholas’ strategic vision and commitment to our mission.
KCDHH hosted two booths at the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) national convention in Louisville, June 10-12. The first KCDHH booth shared information about our programs and services. The second, called “Access @ Home,” was an interactive display showcasing a variety of assistive technologies designed to make homes safer and more accessible for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Attendees were able to experience a setup featuring an alarm clock with a bed shaker, as well as a weather radio connected to a pillow shaker and flashing alert system. A mock door demonstrated how doorbells and motion detectors can send visual notifications through a home alert system, helping individuals stay aware of activity around their home.
The booths were very busy on both days. Many visitors were surprised at the wide range of assistive technologies available and shared that they had never seen some of these devices before. Many wanted to know if their home state had a Commission or similar agency.
One of the highlights was a visit from the hotel safety team, who stopped by to learn more about accessible alerting systems. Their interest focused on improving their ADA kits and enhancing fire alarm notification systems for deaf and hard of hearing guests.
