October Shines a Spotlight on Hearing Health

It’s both Audiology Awareness Month and National Protect Your Hearing Month - a time to raise awareness about hearing loss, highlight the importance of protecting our ears, and share ways to keep our hearing strong for years to come.

ASL Performance of "FDR's Very Happy Hour"

Actors Theater of Louisville's "FDR’s VERY HAPPY HOUR" looks and feels like… a happy hour! Audience members are invited to sit, chat with their neighbors, and get a drink before (and even during!) the show. The performance features two actors, and mixes humor and history to build on the “happy hour” tradition for our era. It also asks how FDR’s triumphs and failures might illuminate our own civic health. Strangers become friends—and perhaps, together, find ways to talk with their neighbors again.

About Access Services:
One of the main themes of the show is access, so all performances are ASL interpreted, have captioning, and have audio description available. Actors Theatre of Louisville would like to extend a discounted ticket offer of $20 (+ $5 processing fee, $25 total) to Deaf community members who would like to attend. The performances run October 15-26.

How to get tickets:

  1. Call 502-584-1205.
  2. Email BOXOFFICE@actorstheatre.org, and Julie or Jordan will reserve your seat.
  3. If you are downtown on Thursdays, the Box Office at Actors Theatre (316 Main Street) is open in person from 10-2 pm.

Medicaid Hearing Health Funding at Risk!

Recently, a U.S. budget reconciliation bill was passed that reduces federal funding for Medicaid by hundreds of billions of dollars. Medicaid covers medical costs for nearly 80 million low-income Americans. Most states offer some hearing health benefits under this program, which are now at risk of being cut.

Urge your state representatives to protect Medicaid hearing health funding today!

TV Captions Research Survey

Gallaudet University seeks U.S. residents age 18+ with hearing loss for consumer research measuring quality of captioning for news, sports and other television programming to improve accessibility. Participants will spend about 30 minutes watching short, captioned video clips, answering questions about caption accuracy and rating the clips.

Learn more and apply by October 31.

National Deaf Seniors Survey

Deaf Seniors of America (DSA) and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) have launched a national survey to better understand the experiences, needs, and strengths of Deaf older adults (50+).

This survey will help shape future programs, policies, and services to ensure that Deaf seniors are included in aging and health equity initiatives nationwide.

Take the survey here!

Need assistance completing the survey in ASL? Contact info@deafseniors.us to schedule a Video Phone (VP) appointment with a DSA team member.
